Born in rural Wisconsin in 1940, Robert Roy Green has been a leading activist of surrealism in the U.S. since 1966. He has co-organized several important surrealist exhibitions, including the first American surrealist group show at the Gallery Bugs Bunny (Chicago 1968) and the World Surrealist Exhibition (Chicago 1976), where he elaborated the Domain of Doctor Faustroll. His sculptures, paintings and drawings have also appeared in surrealist exhibitions in England, France, Iceland, Portugal and Mexico.He was a regular collaborator on Arsenal/Surrealist Subversion and other surrealist publications throughout the world, such as, L’Archibras (Paris), Analagon (Prague), Brunmes Blondes (Amsterdam), Salamandra (Madrid) and has written five books: Unscripted Journeys (2013) , Steam Age Machines (2014), Legends of Heresy (2018), Characters I Have Met (2020) and Stowaway to Parts Unknown (2023). His cartoons have appeared in several revolutionary and labor publications; his collection of drawings and poems, Seditious Mandibles, was published by Black Swan Press in 1981. Green has written many satirical essays and prose poems that are published in recent years. He lived in Chicago for most of his adult life but now resides in California with his wife, Debra Taub Green, surrealist collagist and former dancer.
